Demographic Winter: The Population Decline
We live in a changing world, where the 'ideal' family is changing, and peoples views on the importance of family are declining. This could be viewed as a minor problem, or even dismissed as unimportant, but the facts state otherwise. Our world is just a few years away from a steady decline and downfall.
Families are a major support system to our world in several different areas. It all began in the 1900's with the Baby Boom, people were having children left and right, or so it seemed. This led people to the fear of over-population and was shortly accompanied by a small book published, "The Population Bomb". Essentially the book talked about how, 'babies are destroying our planet'. People then began to fear having children, leading to a decline in sub-fertility rate, causing declining populations.
But the fact is, population growth is not evil, in fact it is necessary for our own benefit worldwide. There are many struggles and problems that arise with declining populations and lack of births. One of those many problems includes aging populations.
There is nothing wrong with the elderly, I myself love working with the elderly as a nurses assitant. I have personally seen the many benefits of the elderly, they truly are wise and have experience and wisdom to pass on to the younger generations to help us progress and move forward instead of making the same mistakes their generation did. However, the problem lies in there being far more elderly than youth. As birth rates decrease we will shortly run into the problem of having too few youth to fill the positions of our current working class. Not only will we not be able to fill all the working positions but we will not have enough youth to care for our elderly. This means our youth will have to do more work for less.
Another major problem that will come along is that of real estate. Currently we have several retirees upgrading to larger homes, to enjoy their retirement. They plan to sell these homes to the new comers looking for homes and more into a smaller home or retirement community where they can be looked after. The problem is, the youth of today will be those home buyers. And with the decline in birth rate there will not be enough youth to go around to buy the homes making it roughly 60% too heavy on the selling side. 60% of people will not be able to sell their homes to the youth, because those youth will not have been born. This could lead to the very collapse of real estate.
Many people may argue that a decline in population is not a valid argument, because at this time the population appears to still be growing. The only reason population appears to be growing is due to immigration. It is suspected that by 2050 most of the US population will be Hispanic.
But immigration can only help for so long. Even for Hispanics, being known for having many children and large families, the birth rate is dropping. In 1970 the average woman in Mexico would have 6.8 children, whereas in 2010 is is now an average of 2.2-2.4.
However, there is a solution that can help to avoid all of these problems. Have more children. Benjamin Franklin once said that the human population doubles every 20 years, this has been found to be false. But even if that fact were true, we would be okay as a planet. Back in Franklin's day we did not have as much knowledge and understanding as we do today. People didn't live as long. But today, people are living much longer due to our new knowledge and medical advances. We can support and sustain so much more life on earth today. We have had great advances in the agriculture industry as well providing us with more food to support and sustain more life on earth. We do not need to fear having children, because we will be able to sustain them. We need these children to help save our world from collapse. "The family is the natural, fundamental, group unit of society, and is entitled to protection (Demographic Winter)."
